In 1453 the Ottoman Turks conquered the Byzantine Empire, ending the long Greek-Roman chapter in Europe, and this is obviously still the main source of hostilities between modern Greeks and Turks.
In the Ottoman Empire non Muslims were treated as second class citizens. At the same time Turks borrowed Greek-Roman architecture to build mosques, baths and public buildings. And the Turkish language changed under the influence of the occupied territories, Arabic and Persian words came in fashion, creating a new language and culture. A modern day Turk does not
